Privacy Respecting Apps
Rethink what is safe to use for private communications
Standard phone calls through your operator are not encrypted
Standard SMS messages through your operator are not encrypted
Video conferencing is now an every day thing for most people
Privacy and security of most corporate services have a very poor track record. Either data gathering or being vulnerable to hackers or both
Standard emails are not encrypted and easily intercepted
Additionally if you use gmail or hotmail or apple mail all of your emails are scanned, not just for content but also to profile you
Your apps are spying on you
They contain ‘Trackers’ which gather data about you and how you use the app like when and where
When you install an app it asks for permissions to access things like your camera or your location
Many apps request excessive permissions so they can gather data on you
They also leak information about your device, location and other personal information
So is your Government
Everything you say and send is recorded by the Govt
Edward Snowden revealed in 2014 that GCHQ in the UK operates a ‘Full Take’ surveillance system
Your service providers and ISPs are required by law to keep records of all of your calls, messages and browsing history
The simplest solution to this is to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) service
VPNs hide your location and Internet identity (IP address) as well as encrypting all data moving to and from your devices
We recommend the following for the best privacy
Perfect Privacy – The best but technical and makes no attempt to work with services like Netflix
Nord VPN or Express VPN – The best for speed, privacy and Netflix friendly
Surfshark – unlimited devices and Netflix friendly
You need to use private secure apps and services unless it's really trivial
Start using the recommended apps below
Move your friends, family and important contacts over
Allow some time for the transition
Recommended Privacy Respecting Apps
We pre install a suite of apps including the following on our devices
You can also install these now on your existing devices and start the process
Calls & Messaging
These apps will not only encrypt your messages from end to end…
They will not store any data on their servers or collect any metadata about the message
Signal Messenger: Use this first. Extremely good and easy to move your friends over to. Free and supported by donations
Threema: Arguably the best app but it is a paid for app (one time) which means it may be harder to persuade your friends to get it too
Don’t be put off though if you want the best
WickrMe or Wickr Pro: We no longer recommend Wickr since Amazon bought the company
Video Calls / Conferencing
Encrypted Email Services
Setup a free email account with a privacy respecting email service
We recommend
Protonmail and Safeswiss
Pay for upgrades (increased storage and integrations) when you need them
More details about these apps are coming up in ‘Ecosystem Migration’
It is possible to encrypt your emails if you have your own domain name

But I need Whatsapp / Telegram / Viber etc
What you mean is you are still dependent on them (and likely addicted too). Here’s what you can do while transitioning…
- Keep your old phone for only these apps until you move your friends over to recommended privacy apps
- Factory reset it and keep it on WiFi only
- Use web versions of these apps wherever possible
- Whatsapp web
- Skype Web Control
- Use these apps on your Privacy phone in a work profile and deny all but essential permissions
- (Not recommended as it may still compromise your privacy or break the app in some cases)
